About the Navy Body Composition Assessment (BCA)
The Navy Body Composition Assessment (BCA) is a critical component of the Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) that all Sailors must complete. This calculator implements the official two-step BCA process outlined in Guide-4 (December 2025).
How the Navy BCA Works
The updated BCA procedures consist of a two-step process:
- Step 1 - Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR): This measurement indicates body fat distribution, particularly visceral fat, which is related to health risks such as heart disease, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. If your WHtR is ≤ 0.5499, you pass Step 1 and are Within Standards.
- Step 2 - Body Composition Calculation: If you don't pass Step 1, your body fat percentage is estimated using height, waist, and weight measurements. Maximum allowable body fat is 26% for males and 36% for females.
Measurement Guidelines
- Height: Measured without shoes, rounded UP to nearest ½ inch
- Weight: In Navy PTU/OPTU, rounded to nearest pound
- Waist: Measured at umbilicus (bellybutton), tape parallel to deck, rounded DOWN to nearest ½ inch
Important Notes
- Official BCA measurements can only be conducted by certified CFL/ACFLs
- BCA must be completed within 45 days of, but not less than 24 hours prior to, participation in the PRT
- BCA retests are not authorized
- This calculator is for unofficial planning purposes only
